Tom Watson made a 3-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat David Eger in the Senior PGA Championship on Sunday. The 61-year-old Watson, down a shot with four holes left in regulation, became the oldest player to win a major tournament since the 50-and-older seniors tour was created in 1980.
Watson closed with a 2-under 70 at Valhalla to finish at 10-under 278 and capture his 14th career major, six since turning 50, to go with five British Opens, two Masters and a U.S. Open. He earned $360,000.
Both Eger (67) and Watson missed short birdie putts on the 72nd green that would have won the event in regulation. Luke Donald won a duel for the No. 1 world ranking with a playoff victory over fellow Englishman Lee Westwood in the BMW PGA Championship.
Donald, ranked second behind Westwood entering the European Tour event, birdied the par-5 18th hole in the playoff, hitting his approach to about 5 feet before Westwood's wedge shot spun off the green and into the water hazard.
Donald closed with a 1-under 70 to match Westwood (68) at 6-under 278 for 72 holes at Wentworth. Donald joined Westwood and Nick Faldo as the lone Englishmen to hold the No. 1 spot since the ranking was introduced in 1986.
Keegan Bradley won the Byron Nelson Championship for his first PGA Tour victory, parring the first hole of a playoff with Ryan Palmer at the windy TPC Four Seasons. Bradley, 24, a nephew of LPGA Tour great Pat Bradley, made a 2-foot par putt at the 419-yard 18th hole in the playoff. Palmer's approach went into the water and he made a bogey.
Bradley had a 2-under 68 and earned $1.17 million. Bradley and Palmer (72) finished at 3-under 277, the highest winning score on the PGA Tour this year. It was the fifth playoff in six weeks on the PGA Tour. Michael Putnam (72) of University Place tied for 32nd place at 6 over, Kyle Stanley (77) of Gig Harbor tied for 55th place at 10 over and ex-Washington Husky Alex Prugh (77) of Spokane tied for 63rd at 12 over.
