John Boehner and Barack Obama will be joined by two others in their planned golf outing on June 18. Boehner, House of Representatives Speaker, and Obama will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden and Ohio Republican governor John Kasich. Obama will have Biden on his side, while Boehner will team with Kasich.
The location for the event has not been announced yet, but it will not be at Washington's Congressional Country Club, due to the U.S. Open competition taking place there that weekend.
It’s up in the air whether the four politicians will have time to discuss key issues between Republicans and Democrats, such as debt and deficits. The golf outing is said by both sides to be mainly a social occasion, an opportunity to get to know one another and reach across the partisan divide. However, Kasich was chairman of the House Budget Committee during deficit negotiations with the Clinton White House.
Obama has become a somewhat experienced golf player since he became president in 2009, but Boehner is thought to be the best out of the four. Obama usually keeps the media at bay when he plays golf. It is unclear whether the scores of the game will be announced.
