Australian Nathan Green broke through for his first US PGA Tour victory when he won the Canadian Open in a play-off against South African star Retief Goosen on Monday.
Green, from Newcastle, won the rain-delayed tournament with a par at the second extra hole when Goosen's eight foot par attempt slid by the hole at a saturated Glen Abbey course in Oakville, Ontario.
"It's a huge surprise to finally win," said Green, a former Canadian Tour player. "This is where I started my pro career. I love coming up here.
The people are great." Earlier on a long final day, Green completed a third-round 69 with an eagle on 18 then shot a 68 to finish at 18-under-par 270.
He was joined by Goosen who had a 67 third round then eagled the 18th for a 69 in the fourth. Goosen had a putt to win on the first extra hole, but missed a six-foot birdie try.
Anthony Kim (66-73) and Jason Dufner (70-73) tied for third, four strokes back in the event soaked by nearly five inches of rain the first four days.
Green joined the US PGA Tour in 2006 after earning promotion from the secondary Nationwide Tour and his previous best finish was a tied for second in just his second start of that year in the Buick Invitational. It was his second win in Canada, following a 2000 victory in a Canadian Tour event in Sudbury. He also won the Queensland PGA in Australia in 2000 and the European tour's 2006 New Zealand Open.
